I’m originally from a little town called San Luis Obispo (voted happiest place in America by Oprah), and back there I have dear friends that have become like family to me called the Etters.

A couple years ago their oldest daughter Halee turned 16, a big year, a big deal. I wanted to make it a special birthday for her and decided that the gift I wanted to give her was to share an experience together. We both love music so a concert was a good idea and Katy Perry was at the top of her list. I heard she was doing a hometown show at the Santa Barbara Bowl and hustled us 2 tickets.

I drove up from Los Angeles. She drove down from San Luis Obispo. We sprayed every candy colored hairspray you could imagine into our hair in the parking lot. Put on turquoise eyeshadow, cotton candy colored blush + lipstick, and wore our most Katy Perry-esque outfits. We were ready to scream and dance like wild fans, lost in every lyric. It was a sugar explosion of song and dance and we laughed our heads off and sang all the words. Then we rode one of those silly carts with a driver peddling away like a circus-act all the way up and down the hills of Santa Barbara. It was hilarious. We felt drunk on the experience of it all.

I’ll always remember that night with Halee especially every time I watch or listen to anything Katy Perry. I’ve had her album Prism on repeat lately. She sings about her struggles with life and love, swallowing truth like sand, realizing she is enough, and how it is possible to be loved.  It’s a good album to turn the lights off to, let go, and dance. Sometimes life is hard, sobering, and a journey but the fight also makes the victory that much sweeter. The truth is we WILL come out stronger. It may take some time and hard work but from the struggle we will gain character.

ROAR LYRICS

I used to bite my tongue and hold my breath

Scared to rock the boat and make a mess

So I sat quietly, agreed politely

I guess that I forgot I had a choice

I let you push me past the breaking point

I stood for nothing, so I fell for everything

You held me down, but I got up (HEY!)

Already brushing off the dust

You hear my voice, you hear that sound

Like thunder gonna shake the ground

You held me down, but I got up (HEY!)

Get ready ’cause I’ve had enough

I see it all, I see it now

I got the eye of the tiger, a fighter, dancing through the fire

‘Cause I am a champion and you’re gonna hear me roar

Louder, louder than a lion

‘Cause I am a champion and you’re gonna hear me roar

Oh oh oh oh oh oh

Oh oh oh oh oh oh

Oh oh oh oh oh oh

You’re gonna hear me roar

Now I’m floating like a butterfly

Stinging like a bee I earned my stripes

I went from zero, to my own hero

You held me down, but I got up (HEY!)

Already brushing off the dust

You hear my voice, you hear that sound

Like thunder gonna shake the ground

You held me down, but I got up (HEY!)

Get ready ’cause I’ve had enough

I see it all, I see it now….

This song is about not lettin anyone hold you back, not giving up and being a champion with a voice.  That is something I believe in and hope for the women in my life. That they will know their true value beyond circumstances, a relationship, or how they look or feel.

Your time is limited, so don’t waste it living someone else’s life. Don’t be trapped by dogma – which is living with the results of other people’s thinking. Don’t let the noise of others’ opinions drown out your own inner voice. And most important, have the courage to follow your heart and intuition.

I loved this look that Katy wore at her VMA performance. Maybe you’ll wear this look to the gym or while gardening or to work. My hope is that it reminds you that you are a powerful woman with much to give and share with those around you.

Tips

1. Spend time with one of your girlfriends and practice this look on each other.

2. Use my snag free elastics to protect your strands from breakage.

3. If you have slippery hair or fine hair- blow dry a thickening foam into your hair first, roots to ends to create volume and texture and give your hair more style grip.

4. Wear these braids to bed, loosen them and wake up with intense texture.

5. Dress the ends with ribbon or bows.

6. Add a bit of fun by tucking a couple of daisy’s into the braids.

7. Color your hair with chalk first and then create these braids.

Here are two other braid how to videos I made for you: Holly Braid and Bang Braid.

Oh I’d love to go to a Katy Perry concert! Eventhough her live singing isn’t great, I love all her songs and I think she’s a great performer.
