10 Ways to Brighten Your Day

Every once in a while, you wake up and the day just doesn’t feel quite right. We’ve all experienced that funk, and it’s NO GOOD.

I have a couple of tried and true methods that really help lift my spirits when I’m having an off day, and I wanted to share them with you!

1. Buy yourself some flowers. This always makes me feel better. Nothing like looking at a gorgeous bouquet of your favorite flower to make you smile a little bigger. If you live in Los Angeles, check out Clementine Flowers– they have such a cute selection. Sometimes I also like picking myself a couple of flowers when I’m out walking, and just keep them in a tiny glass bottle by my bed. Which brings me to my next happy tip…

2.Go on a long walk through nature. This is good on so many levels. I like to turn off my phone or leave it in my car, and just go for little hikes. It’s so easy to get caught up in the day to day hectic life that we each live, so taking a deep breath and just appreciating the beauty of our surroundings can be such a relief. One of my favorite places to go hiking is in Griffith Park- it’s so magical!

3. Disconnect. Every couple of weeks, I have a day where I don’t check my email, I turn off my phone, and just read, go for walks, get tea, and just fully enjoy the moment. This is so soothing for the mind + emotions. It’s also really hard to do at first, so maybe start out with a half day, and work your way up.

4. Wear white. I know this sounds super strange, but I actually think that what you wear can affect your mood. It’s no wonder that when you go to a Kundalini yoga class, everyone is decked out in white. There’s something so calming about it. Plus it looks amazing- this white romper I’m wearing in the photo above is so comfy and soft, but it looks super chic when I pair it with some good sandals.

5. Treat yourself. On meh days, I always like to treat myself EXTRA special. I go to my favorite cafe, and buy my favorite sweet treat + latte, I go get my nails done, and then I take myself for a nice glass of wine at the end of the day. A little goes a long way, and self-appreciation is way underrated. I also love doing at home facials.  I start with an exfoliating mask , and then use a sheet mask, which I keep cool in the fridge. I finish it all up with a good eye cream under my eyes to tightened brighten!  This is also a great time to do a hair mask- this one is one of my faves.

6. Try something new.  Whenever I feel down, my first instinct is to lay around in pajamas all day and do nothing. There’s nothing wrong with that, but it usually doesn’t make me feel any better. So now, I do the exact opposite. I get up and spend the extra minute to blow-out my hair, put on my favorite lipstick, and wear my favorite dress. Sometimes just dressing up can put a little smile on your face and make you feel incredible!

7. Meditate. I had to mention this, because it really helps me. 10-15 minutes of meditation a day really clears my head. I recently came across an app called Headspace that helps introduce you to meditation. It’s very accessible and intuitive.  I think of meditation as exercise for your mind. In the same way you work out different parts of your body, meditation helps you control, connect,  or release certain parts of your mind

8. Work Out. Getting your heart rate up is like natural Prozac. I like going for a run or doing a PopPhysique class- even if I’m feeling grey before, I always leave feeling revived and alive! Endorphins are the best medicine.

9. Appreciate.  Another trick I like doing is writing a gratitude list, where I put everything that I am thankful for in the world.  It can be anything, from your family to the fact that you have a parking spot. Reminding yourself of the good things in your life is vital for your emotional well-being.

10. Remember. The big thing to remember is that you won’t feel down forever. Feelings pass, and you just have to stick it out. Remember, you are a strong, awesome person who can handle anything!
